Some say..(continued, part III)

srI mahA gaNapathE

iyengAru veetu azhagE (ANNiyan) (janya of chala nAttai)

naLinagAnthi

nalinagAnthimathim
manavyALakin

endhan nenjil neengAdha (kalaignan)
sonnAlum kEtpadhillai (kAdhal virus)
noodhanA (karka kasadara) (not entirely…there are some phrases of hamsadvani, kEdAram)

neelAmbari

Can’t remember any song on this one. However, in the song, en swAsa kAtrE, towards the end, there is a very sweet instrumental piece, on the veena, backed by bass and occasional humming by Chithra (who else can it be !)….. classic neelAmbari…. from 3.39 till the very end of the song, it is just BLISS ! having trouble sleeping ? check this out ! :)

pAvani

pArtha vizhi pArtha padi (guNA)…tricky find… brainstormed with a couple of unknown friends, through orkut and learnt this one….don’t know much about this…. Probably should ask the Maestro himself :)

reethi goulai

thAmboolavakuL – MLV
azhagAna rAtchasiyE (mudhalvan)

kaNNan vandhu azhaikkirAn (movie ?)

rEvathi

bhO sambhO – a passionate raga and a perfectly matching song, best sung by the great Maharajapuram Santhanam…. Starts slow, and builds up to an amazing climax, where one cant help but feel the electricity in the air..
nAnAti batuku – listened to this one by MS , scintillating recital… cant find words to describe the emotional involvement she brings in…stunning !

sahAnA

anbE sugamA (paarthale paravasam) – The intro music itself gives a hunch, and probably expert ears might get it right then. But to me, it was totally obvious when the song reaches 4.29… the violin solo is the signature – the notes are (almost) along the definition of this raga, (ArOhaNam/avarOhaNam)
Version #1 – violin solo concluding verse (4.29)
Version #2 – Bass interlude, leading to a violin solo (1.55) (like the bass version better, also Srinivas’s entry improvisation after the first interlude is really amazing)
pArthEn rasithEn (veera abhimanyu)
sAmA/Arabhi/suddha sAveri/durgA

en uyir thOzhiyE (kaNgaLAl kaidhi sei) – sounds like durgA to me
Oh sukumAri (aNNiyan) – Banged heads with a couple about this, posted in a few forums… no answer yet… but I felt that it was more slanted towards sAmA….Shankar Mahadevan’s gamakam (0.32-0.50), (3.31-3.40) sounded like an AlApanai leading into “mAnasa sanchararE” .The first interlude gives the song a Arabhi flavour. Interestingly sAmA and Arabhi are very close in the swara structure; Arabhi is different only by one swara, in that it has a nishAdam in the avarOhaNam.
Verdict – ??

saraswathi/sArangA

The only song I know with this beautiful combination – malargaLae (Love Birds)… lilting vocals by Hariharan and Chithra…The intro is a mix of both ragas… saraswathi stare at the face from (2.00-2.33)… the charanams establish the sArangA part of the song. “en koondhal …” and “vAzhvOdu valarpirai dhanE…” The second interlude is just amazing with the “minnal vegam” guitar/mandolin (not sure) and the string ensemble giving a generous serving to saraswathi lovers.

sAvithri

Could only decipher the swaras from these songs, but did not have a “label” (raga) to pin it to. Finally bumped into this one (stumbled upon this actually while looking for something else) on http://www.karnatik.com/
kavidhai keLungaL (Punnagai mannan)
pudhiya poovidhu (Thendrale ennai thodu)
thudikiradE (Azhagan)

shanmuga priyA

kannukkuL nooru nilavA (vEdham pudhidhu)
thakita thathimi (salangai oli)
sollAyO vAi thirandhu (MOgamuL)

sindhu bhairavi

unakkenna mElE nindrAi (simlA special)
mArgazhi thingaL allavA (sangamam) – unni’s entry after the second interlude..simply spell binding…!
poongAtru pudhirAnadhu (moondrAm pirai)
The one song I like (and know) in classical music is “venkatAchala nilayam”, especially the MLV version.

siva ranjani

kurai ondrum illai – the first charaNam. Every time I listen to this song, I go speechless and it provokes deep contemplation. about what ? err….uh…. :)
thErE mErE beech mE (Ek dujE kE liyE)
enadhu gAnam un kAdhil vizha villayA (me thinks some T Rajendar movie)
unakkena iruppEn (kAdhal) – Haricharan ROCKS ! this is another of those lump-in-the-throat, knot-in-the-gut, tear-provoking, song ! well, the raga itself has that flavour to it..
Though the original structure of the raga does not have an antara gAndhAram, it is sometimes included in some phrases, which I think is more of an embellishment…. (some rules are good only when they are broken, right ?..:))

  5. Just now saw this post. Great analysis :)
Wanted to add “Maraindhirundhe parkum” from Thillana Mohanambal to the Shanmugha Priya list.

  6. vaa vaa anbe from agni natchatiram was also set in shivaranjini. Such a wonderfully sad song, thought you should include it too. Great work by the way.

  7. I reuquest anyone show a link to listen to

nAnAti batuku – by MS Subbulakshmi garu

    Thank you
    Dhanush

  8. Sama is a wonderful raga for alapanas. I love Parakelanayya Rama by Mysore Vasudevacharya.

Kannan vandu paadukindran from Mella thirandadhu kadhavu is probably Natabhairavi. Sounds like it.

Hai rama sounded like Patuvarali and like Mayamalavagowla in places – when I tried playing it on my guitar it seemed to fit into the Mayamalavagowla scheme.

Shivaranjani rocks. Jaane Kahan Gaye Woh Din from Mera Naam Joker is a superb example of that one.

Sindhu Bhairavi – lots of good ones here. I remember Karunai Deivame Karpagame and amongst Ilayaraja’s compositions – Valaiosai Kala Kala from Kamalahasan starrer Sathya.

  9. philramble,

    Thanks for droppin by…

Yes, Sama though simple in structure, is probably one of the difficult ragas for a musician to perform a rich alapana.

Strange that you mention Hai Rama showing shades of MMG.. never thought about it that way… have to listen to it again to find out.

Shivaranjani, one of my favourites! and yes, Jaane kahan.. wonderful composition!
