I watched this movie recently… well, not bad for a remake, i must say. anyhoo, this is not a movie review… so let me start writing about what I really wanted to share…
The Mere Dholna song, is what I really wanna talk about. Shreya Ghoshal no question, has rendered the song fantastically! MG Sreekumar…hmm.. somehow his voice and the sections that he sings, reminds me of Chitchor & KJ (Y)Jesudoss.. especially the song Mitwa and Tu Jo Mere Sur Mein…Moving on, the interludes weren’t that brain tickling as I felt they should have been… Well, Raa Raa(Chandramukhi) and Oru Murai(Manichittirathazhu) were just scintillating compositions entirely…
So, anyway, the song has a delightful mix of ragas.. but one of the main veins, in my opinion, has various flavours of Harikambodhi…. there is a little Kapi… and then there is a section where Sreekumar belts out swarams…. S G3 M1 D2 N2 S (aaro/avaro).. a little lookup at karnatik.com led me to a ragam named “Neela” (janya of Harikambodhi). Now, I cannot verify the authenticity of this information as I have never heard of the ragam myself. Assuming that raga Neela is valid, it is an interesting shift/twist from the ragam “Shuddha Hindolam”, with S G2 M1 D2 N2 S (refer this post).

i will watch it hazaar times just coz my drool-worthy akshay looks HOT in this movie….in the song….Hare Ram Hare Ram….:) man….*drooooooooooooool*
and then there is a section where Sreekumar belts out swarams…. S G3 M1 D2 N2 S (aaro/avaro)
Is there not a Panchamam in this scale? I’m pretty sure the part he sings is something like:
G M P D N D P D P M G M G R S N etc.
Just a thought, because I’ve been wondering about what ragam this song is as well. Parts of it resemble Natta Kurunji as well.
K Raj – you are right about there being a Panchamam, but that piece comes much later in the song. I just re-listened to the song, to ascertain the presence of ‘Pa’, for myself.
Essentially, in my opinion, this song is very broadly based on Harikambhodhi… and I agree there are slight shades of nattai kurinji sprinkled in there as well. nattai kurinji, neela etc. are all after all janyas of HK.
thanks for the comment.
