What’s in a name?
April 30, 2008 by zeppelin
One of the managers at work is named Richard. So what? you might think… It’s just a regular name you say? Not when he chooses to go by Dick. It’s just weird to call him by that name… you know… I can’t imagine myself saying “Hey Dick, how’s it goin?”, especially if ever, we happen to meet in the restroom. I just can’t do it. So I decided I will not call him ever, even when I have to get him to help me co-ordinate a project, and have resigned to always emailing him, and if the need arises I just ask my manager to give him a call and talk to him.
I always wonder….what if he was bullied in school for his firstname? and then he suddenly remembers all that in some conference call that I am in, and senses the uneasiness in my tone when I call out his name…and…um…. thinks I am a dick. you know?
While I searched the cosmos, pontificatin’ about such life changing questions and such, I wondered whether any names back home would be similarly embarrassing. Guess what? I didn’t have to think for long.

**Update: Now, I know most of my friends who read this blog would cringe, wondering why I have to write posts like these and reveal more and more of my “dark side” in public. These people and others, would not care to comment although it might have brought a little smile to their faces, for, **gasp**, they will be judged. Either that, or it will be revealed that they have already crossed over too, and they are just confused double-agents. ![]()
U said he chose to be called ‘Dick’? Weirdo!!

Dick is very common (for Richard) in the US and strangely nobody minds nor makes fun - it is as common as Arun here ;).
You of course have Dick Cheney, but then he is truly one anyway
arun - of course… it is common, but strangely enough, things like these, though common enough, still gives me a mild chuckle at times
these are all the weay better than Mr Minor Kunju, who got shot at, by Vivek…in a comedy track…
