PC gaming issues

Tried installing Half Life 1: Anthology, on my Vista Ultimate, and the damn thing would not run. Uninstalled the sucker, and installed, NFS:Carbon.. and voila! even raced a couple tracks with it. :-)

Anybody out there can explain why? or is it just that HalfLife is history?

  1. If you installed the Anthology as a free standing game then that might be the issue. NFS Carbon used DX9.Older games like Half-Life used an earlier version of DX that Vista has trouble with.

You SHOULD be able to get around this by installing Half-Life anthology thru Valves content delivery system, Steam. They have done a great job of keeping even the old games compatible.

    • Phil – Thanks for the info… I think the media (DVD) that I bought does the whole Steam install thing…and at the very end, however, it does fail on some update process. This might perhaps be the issue, and it may have aborted downloading/installing some important file.. not sure.

  2. Did you check the video settings? More details please. Are you running HL-1 from Steam?

Unreal 1 and HL1 were my favourite shooters until HL2 came along. :)

    • bro, didn’t try to go into depths… hehe…and yes, I think I am running HL1 from Steam…atleast there is a whole Steam install that happens before the games are installed.

I was trying to decide which ones to trade in to buy COD4. HL1 might possibly be one of the trade-ins. :-(
