Kamal’s latest movie is certainly no match for A Wednesday… But then, perhaps I wouldn’t be saying this, had I not watched the Hindi movie.
The major things that stood out in this tamil movie were the fact that Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher were leagues ahead in their performances. Jimmy Shergill was way better and so was the other Inspector assisting Jimmy in the transfer. The guy who played Arif looked a little like he was doing a Tantex advertisement.. I guess he is good looking and pulls off the tough cop style to an extent, but not as nonchalantly as Jimmy did.
Lakshmi was a total waste… her character seemed like one of those mother-in-law characters from some of the mega serials of today. She must perhaps write a book titled “
Kamal is his usual… playing full center stage with his annoying use of a strongly non-Indian English accent. (rolling r’s especially).. which I felt was completely unncessary.. At the very beginning of his affected verbal abuse of Mohanlal’s character, he starts explaining about C4… like anybody watching the movie would care to know… from the movie that is.
The toilet shown in the police station looked like a 3 star toilet… who are they kidding? How is this a portrayal of reality?
Anyway…The movie was alright, but sometimes it tries to take itself too seriously, and that is a little annoying, to say the least… and, Shruthi Hassan’s music is very pedestrian.

pina pordhu. mannichudu!
haha… of course…. kamal range-ukku illa da padam.
I didnt get a chance to watch Naan Kadavul… But I saw Unnaipol Oruvan with all the expectations of a Kamal Fan
I would say i was not much disappointed mainly because I knew already no one can match the original movie. So it was purely an unbiased expectation from an ardent kamal fan. But as u say Arif Character and Lakshmi disappointed me. To and extent, even Mohanlal wasnt that grippy to watch. Shruthi BG music was really good.. but the OST are nothing new or great to talk abt…
Giri – I was not disappointed per se… just a tad let down, because after all it is Kamal, and I thought he would atleast match the performance in Hindi or improve upon it. Unnai Pol Oruvan was subpar on many accounts… The unnecessary Lakshmi character, a rather emotional Police chief, and a peter uttufying Kamal.
Shruthi’s BGM didn’t do anything for me, honestly. Appidi onnum specialla irundha maadhiri theriyala.
Yeah, I felt the same way. Naseeruddin Shah was wayyyy more believable..But I am biased cuz I saw the Hindi version first..so can’t be too sure of objectivity…:) Mohanlal seemed to burst into temper tantrums for no reason..seemed rather erratic for high ranking police officer.
Subha – of course, I think I am subconsciously carrying the same bias. But then, at some level, Naseeruddin Shah’s character made a tremendous impact, which Kamal was unable to produce for whatever reason. and of course Anupam Kher vs. Mohanlal… ‘nuf said.
Mams,
You said the same points I noted in the movie. I watched the movie for one reason – my dad’s cousin co-wrote the dialogues with Kamal. Other than some places, the dialogue was a big let down for me. It was heavily melodramatic. Rolling ‘r’ was very irritating.
When I watched A Wednesday, I could def’ly connect with N.Shah and Kher, but not here. It was extremely annoying. Further I did not see the reason why they thrust the issue of the reporter smoking in the movie. What were they thinking? Further, I felt the movie did not flow smoothly either. grrrr…..
srirama – DITTO.
